Lukas, a driver and interpreter for the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe is monitoring the ongoing conflict in southern Ukraine inspecting military check-points with his colleagues. When the SUV they’re travelling in breaks down, Lukas heads off alone to look for help (or an unlikely phone signal) but when he returns to the vehicle, his colleagues have vanished.
Heading deeper and deeper into unknown territory (the Wild West as far as this man from Kiev is concerned) and taking up the offer of hospitality from an eccentric detectorist and his family, no path (a la Wake in Fright) seems to lead home. Soon enough, things that had once seemed strange start to seem just different, and perhaps, even, life-affirming…
Absurdity and weirdness can be an off-putting thing, but director Roman Bondarchuk gets it exactly right, deepening the intrigue in this visually striking, entirely splendid black comedy.
