Truman Capote was a singular figure in the 20th century; his books (In Cold Blood, Breakfast at Tiffany’s) were popular yet revered; he was a socialite, who knew everything about everyone, and was a famously indiscreet talk-show guest, yet he retained an enigmatic quality. His celebrity permitted him to lead an openly gay life at a time when such behaviour was discouraged.
The Capote Tapes illuminates his life and legacy through newly discovered interviews with friends of the author made by Paris Review co-founder George Plimpton. The film dwells on Capote’s unfinished final novel, Answered Prayers, intended to be an excoriating expose of Manhattan’s social aristocracy; three excerpts were published as magazine pieces, but no further manuscript was ever found.
