Brandon Cronenberg (son of legendary horror director David) directs this stylish, violent sci-fi horror starring the magnetic Andrea Riseborough (Mandy). Just as his father delved deep into the horrors of the physical body and our collective subconscious to explore contemporary society, so too does Cronenberg Jr, turning his attention to thoroughly modern ideas of big data, surveillance, capitalism, and our very identity in an increasingly digital world.
Set in the not-so-distant future, Riseborough plays Tasya Vos, a contract killer who works for a corporation which can transfer the consciousness of an assassin into a host body to carry out a hit. While there are shades of The Matrix, Inception, and Blade Runner 2049 in this set-up, Possessor is a far more visceral film, melding sleek sci-fi imagery with pleasingly grotesque practical effects and full-on disorienting, hallucinatory mayhem. With a score by Jim Williams (Raw, Kill List, A Field in England) and supporting turns by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sean Bean, this is essential viewing for horror fans.
