Bill Douglas’ influential trilogy harks back to his impoverished upbringing in early-‘40s Scotland, with_ My Childhood_ illustrating an intensely moving portrait of childhood.

Set in 1945, the first part of Douglas’ triptych revisits his impoverished childhood, living with his grandmother and half-brother in the Scottish mining village of Newcraighall.

Beautiful, but austere black and white camerawork captures eight-year-old Jamie’s daily life in an unsentimental manner, as everyday harsh realities are set against the solace young Jamie finds in the cinema.
