Effie Gray (2014)

With a script by Emma Thompson, this film brings to life the love triangle between the philanthropist, social reformer and intellectual John Ruskin (played by Thompson’s husband Greg Wise) and his much younger, less well educated bride, the Scottish beauty Euphemia ‘Effie’ Chalmers (Dakota Fanning). First meeting when she was 13 and he was 23, the match was encouraged by both families but it becomes clear almost immediately that Effie feels trapped and isolated in her marriage and their differences would ultimately result in a scandal that gripped Victorian society.

In the capable hands of Thompson (who also appears in the film as the independent, intelligent writer Lady Eastlake) Effie Gray is an intriguing examination of sexual politics, art and love in the 19th century.
