German filmmaker Anne Zohra Berrached approaches the story of radicalisation – inspired by actual events, but not explicitly based on them – from an entirely new angle in Copilot, a love story between two young Muslim students, Asli (Canan Kir) and Saeed (Roger Azar) living in Germany in the mid-1990s.
When research science student Asli and the charismatic and enigmatic Saeed meet at college, their chemistry is instantaneous, and a dizzying intense romance unfolds. Although their connection is overshadowed by the disapproval of Asli’s mother and Saeed’s increasingly radicalised views, they get married in secret. Their future should look bright, but as the 21st-century dawns, Saeed makes a decision that will not only shatter Asli’s dreams but shake the whole world to the core.
Shot over five months, Berrached and the actors explored the everyday details of the private lives behind politics. The results are powerful - a complex story of love, naivety, and the ultimate betrayal.
