Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Men) adapted Jeff VandeerMeer’s award-winning novel for his second film in the director’s seat.

Natalie Portman plays Lena, a biologist and former soldier who joins a mission to uncover the truth about the disappearance of her husband Kane (Oscar Isaac). Kane is the only person to have ever made it back out of a mysterious, rapidly-expanding quarantined zone called The Shimmer. Joined by an all-female team of fellow scientists (ably played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Gina Rodriguez), Lena sets off into the Shimmer to find out the truth.

Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscape and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity, and Garland goes all-out with the cosmic horror, combining psychedelic sci-fi imagery with grisly moments of body horror and gore. While this film (like many sci-fi films before it) owes a considerable debt to Tarkovsky’s Stalker, not least in Annihilation’s poetic, philosophical tone, it spins familiar sci-fi ideas into a disturbing, beautiful nightmare that is entirely its own.
